A family sailing the Pacific

Waitangi

Yesterday we went to Waitangi, where the treaty of Waitangi was signed. When we were there, we learnt about the history of the treaty.
Apparently, there were two versions of the treaty, one in English and one in Maori. The Maori version said that the people from the United Kingdom coming to settle in New Zealand would act under ‘governor ship’, while the English version said that they would act under ‘sovereignty’. Governorship means that the English help with the community but not control it. Sovereignty means that the English would control New Zealand, the community and the indigenous (Maori). Major differences! There were any protests and a big scandal.

I hope you liked this blog!

A great blog Iris. Itโ€™s so good to visit the places where these historic events took place so you can put it all into perspective. Keep up the blogging. Weโ€™re really enjoying hearing about your travels.

  2. Hi Iris,
I did like your post. Nice to read some history about New Zealand. If you stay long enough in New Caledonia you will be able to comment on their vote on November 4 about becoming independent or not.
Have a nice time sailing ! Hope the ocean won’ t be too rough.
Lots of love to you all.
    Monique

  3. Sausage,

What must be interesting for you is seeing that your blog is being read all over the world! By Christine in London, Monique in the south of France, by your aunts and cousin in Pennsylvania and now by Granny Bardsley in New York. You are seeing and learning so much even when it is not good sailing weather.

Please keep us in touch with what you are doing. It all sounds very exciting.

    Lots of love

  6. Hi Iris:

I just caught up with the site and all the blog posts. Good for you keeping us informed. I’m glad you appreciated the Waitangi Museum. I was there a few weeks back, and I thought they did a pretty good job of telling a complex story. As I write this, you are in the middle of the long voyage from NZ to New Caledonia. I hope it’s not too dull to have nothing much to look at for so long. It looks from the map like you guys are making excellent time.

    Love Aunty S
